Troubleshooting Starlink "Offline" or "Searching" Errors in Nigeria

Troubleshooting Starlink offline and searching status in Nigerian home

Read the word in the app before you buy another kit. Searching means the dish is powered and has not locked satellites yet. Offline means it is not on the network: power, cable, account, or a fault. A red light on the router is a different symptom, covered in the red-light guide. A dish that reboots in a loop is the reboot guide.

For Searching or Offline, work in order: power, sky view, cable, payment, then weather. Most fixes are dull. Reboot, pay the bill, or move the dish clear of the tank. Slow rain is the rain guide, not this checklist.

Different from slow rain — see rain fade guide. For account region issues — roaming restrictions. DataGram field techs handle mechanical faults via home installation support in Lagos and nationwide.

    Step 1: Power and LEDs

Confirm mains, inverter, or UPS actually outputting — generator changeover gaps reboot mid-search. Power-cycle: dish off 30 seconds, router off, restore dish first, wait five minutes. Check LED patterns in kit guide.

Step 2: Obstruction and sky view

Open app obstruction map. New neighbour wall, grown tree, or dish knocked by wind blocks lock. Harmattan film plus obstruction is worse — gentle clean if safe. Temporary reposition to open yard proves diagnosis.

    Step 3: Cable and connectors

Integrated cable kinked in door frame, rat chew, or water in gland causes searching loops. Inspect exterior run after storms. Indoor Ethernet adapter loose if using bypass mode.

    Step 4: Account and payment

Declined card pauses service — payment guide. Wrong service address for current dish location causes policy blocks.

    Step 5: App and firmware

Update Starlink app. Leave dish online overnight for firmware — interrupted updates need clear sky retry.

    Step 6: Weather wait

Active thunder — wait for cell to pass. Searching during dry clear sky after steps above points to hardware or cable — call installer.

    When to escalate to DataGram

Dry sky, paid account, clean obstruction, still searching after two power cycles — likely physical fault. Photo app error, LED state, and roof access window to contact.

    Nigerian-specific causes we see often

Generator neutral drift rebooting only the router while dish LED looks fine. Estate power curfew cutting outdoor circuits at midnight. Rat-chewed cable in compound walls after dry season. New neighbour extension blocking south sky without you noticing until Searching persists all week. UPS battery dead — outlet live but router browns out on inrush.

    Quick reference table in prose

Offline with dark LEDs: power path first. Searching over 20 minutes, clear sky: obstruction or cable. Offline immediately after payment due date: billing. Searching only during storms: wait, then retest dry. Offline after estate generator hour: UPS or dedicated circuit. Searching after move without address update: account region — see roaming guide.

When professional help is faster than DIY

Roof access restricted, integrated cable suspect, or estate requires licensed installer for parapet work — book sales and installation rather than repeated app reboots. Photos of LED colour, app error text, and last dry-weather speed test speed dispatch.

Stuck on Searching after the checklist? Contact DataGram with photos — we dispatch install techs for cable and mount faults.
