Does Starlink Work During Heavy Harmattan Dust?

Starlink dish on Nigerian rooftop during harmattan haze season

Harmattan dust does not usually stop a Starlink dish. Heavy haze can trim the peak. A film of dust on the face, a loose mount, or grit in a connector or gland causes worse faults than the haze itself.

Rain is the other seasonal problem, and it behaves differently. That guide is why Starlink slows in the rain. The dry-season haze itself is fine dust, from Abuja and Kaduna through shorter spells in Lagos and Enugu. For a mount that survives the season, see home installation and Abuja.

What harmattan does to satellite links

Fine dust slightly increases attenuation. Throughput on a hazy day may sit a few percent to about twenty percent under a clear dry night. That range is an indicative observation, not a guarantee. Outright offline is uncommon unless dust cakes the dish face or gets into a connector or cable gland.

    Dust on the dish face

A uniform dust film is less harmful than leaves or bird droppings, and it is still worth cleaning. Use a soft cloth and water. Do not use abrasives on the array face, and do not cover the dish while it is operating. Check the connector and the cable gland as well as the face. Dust in a plug, or a cracked seal, can take the link offline when haze alone would not. Schedule the wipe for a time when roof access is allowed.

    Wind and mount torque

Harmattan carries gusts that loosen cheap brackets. Walk the roof monthly: bolt torque, cable drip loops intact, gland sealant not cracked. Vibrating mounts raise obstruction scores as aim wanders.

    Indoor vs outdoor router dust

Dust through windows clogs router vents — thermal throttle looks like slow internet. Keep networking gear off the floor in open-plan offices.

Harmattan vs heavy rain — different fixes

Rain needs patience; harmattan needs cleaning and mechanical checks. Do not blame rain fade scripts when the app shows clear weather and the dish is filthy.

Northern Nigeria and Sahel edge sites

Kano, Maiduguri, and Sokoto routes see longer haze windows. Camp and NGO sites should add quarterly maintenance to opex. Enterprise handover docs list wipe schedules.

Southern Nigeria harmattan — do not ignore it

Lagos and Port Harcourt get shorter haze spells than the north, but construction dust, Harmattan-adjacent dry winds, and uncleaned balcony rails still coat dishes on fourth-floor flats. Estate compounds with unpaved internal roads kick up fine grit that lands on parapet mounts facing the yard. If your speed tests dip only between November and February, check the dish face before blaming beam congestion.

    Speed expectations during heavy haze

Healthy installs in clear harmattan skies often show a modest drop, on the order of five to fifteen percent off a clear-day peak rather than half speed. That too is indicative, not a guarantee. If downloads fall below a usable video call while the app reports clear weather, obstruction or a dirty array is more likely than haze alone. Run an Ethernet test beside the router to separate Wi-Fi from the satellite. When the weather is actually wet, use the rain fade guide.

    Cleaning safely on Nigerian roofs

Use estate-approved access windows and harness rules where required. Soft microfibre and lukewarm water remove dust without scratching the phased array face. Avoid pressure washers — jet water finds cable glands. Morning cleans beat afternoon heat on metal roofs in Abuja. If you cannot access the roof, book sales and installation maintenance through DataGram rather than leaning from a balcony railing.

Static, dust indoors, and false slow internet

Harmattan static discharges near cheap Ethernet switches cause port resets that feel like satellite faults. Ground networking gear properly. Dust through open windows clogs laptop fans and router vents — thermal throttle on a hot afternoon mimics bad internet. Keep router intake clear and off carpet.

When to call support or installer

Persistent offline with clean dry sky suggests cable or power faults — offline guide. Gradual slowdown only on dusty weeks — clean and re-test before escalation. Seasonal maintenance visits can bundle gland inspection with obstruction re-test — same scope as home installation support retainers.
