Starlink Showing Priority Only in Lagos or Abuja? What to Do in 2026

Starlink dish on a Lagos rooftop where an address may be offered Priority only

Buying a Starlink kit and activating service at an address are two different steps. A dish can be in stock while that address is not being offered a new residential plan. If the Starlink site says "due to high demand in your area, only Priority Plans are available", that message is about the service address you entered. It has been reported on many Lagos and Abuja addresses, and on some Port Harcourt addresses. It is not a standing fact for every street in those cities. Enter the exact address before you pay for hardware.

Check the address before you buy the kit

Open Starlink checkout and type the service address, not a nearby landmark. Write down the plan names the screen actually offers. A kit purchase does not create a residential slot. If the address is paused for new residential signup, the dish can still arrive and then sit unused until that address is offered a plan you can activate.

Hardware prices and monthly plans are separate from that availability check. Current equipment references and subscription figures are on the Nigeria price guide. Mounting, cabling and handover are a third cost, covered in the installation guide.

What a deposit or a wait step means

Some addresses are offered a deposit or a wait step instead of an immediate residential plan. That is not the same message as Priority only, and it is not proof that every address in the city is closed. Tribune reporting in April 2026 described a deposit wait on some paused addresses, while also saying some Port Harcourt and Benin addresses had residential signup again. The only current reading is the sentence on your own address. Nobody can reserve a residential slot for you off the Starlink site.

    What the Priority-only message means

Starlink does not sell service to a country as one pool. The network is divided into geographic cells, and each cell is allocated a finite number of residential subscriber slots based on the satellite capacity passing overhead. It is a capacity number, not a stock number — there is no warehouse of dishes waiting to be replenished.

When a cell fills up, SpaceX pauses new residential activations there. Existing subscribers in that cell are completely unaffected; your neighbour who signed up in 2024 keeps their service and their plan. Only new residential signups are blocked.

In practice the message follows demand. Lagos Island, Victoria Island, Ikoyi, Lekki and Ikeja have been reported in congested cells, and so has central Abuja, including Wuse and Maitama. Port Harcourt should not be grouped with them as a current fact — later reporting said some Port Harcourt addresses, and some Benin addresses, had residential signup again. Enter the exact address. Some addresses also see a deposit or wait step rather than an immediate plan.

SpaceX has not published a timeline for when residential slots will reopen in these areas, and has never committed to one publicly for any market. Slots return as constellation capacity over a region grows, which is a gradual process rather than a scheduled event. Waiting is not a strategy with a known end date.

The Priority Plan — your active route in

The Priority Plan — previously marketed as Business or Priority Business — is a higher-tier subscription that is not subject to the residential cell limit. It draws on a different capacity allocation on the satellite network, which is precisely why it stays available at addresses where residential is paused. Our Priority Plan page for Nigeria covers the plan tiers and what each one includes.

Where the address is being offered Priority rather than residential, speeds are discussed in an indicative field range around 100–350 Mbps, often above what a deprioritised residential line does in the same area at peak. That range is not a guarantee and it is not a DataGram measurement programme. The reason for the difference, when it shows up, is priority allocation. Residential traffic is deprioritised during peak hours by design, which is why a residential connection that tests well at 11am can feel slower at 9pm when the estate is streaming.

Priority throughput is the practical difference for anyone working from home or running a business. Your connection does not degrade during the evening peak the way residential does. For video calls with clients in other timezones, cloud file sync, or a POS terminal that has to authorise a payment while the office is busy, that consistency is the product you are paying for.

It costs more than residential — ₦159,000 per month against ₦57,000–₦75,000 — and that is a real difference, not a rounding error. Where the address is being offered Priority rather than residential, that higher tier is the route on the screen. It is not a standing rule for every new subscriber in Lagos or Abuja. For businesses, the calculation is usually straightforward once you price an hour of downtime.

    What DataGram does for you

Activating a Priority Plan yourself is possible but has more failure points than residential signup, and the payment step defeats most people. We run the whole thing end to end.

    Site survey and plan confirmation

We survey your address to confirm Priority availability, read the obstruction score from the actual mounting position rather than the ground, and advise on which hardware tier suits the building — Standard on a clean parapet, High Performance where users and upload demand justify it.

    Hardware sourcing and activation

We source and deliver the kit, create the account, select the correct plan at checkout, and facilitate payment for clients who cannot arrange a dollar card. Corporate naira cards fail on the SpaceX checkout more often than they succeed, and that single step is where most self-activation attempts stall.

    Installation and handover

Dish mounting, cable routing through estate-approved conduit, router placement, Wi-Fi and VLAN configuration, then testing at the desks where people actually work rather than beside the router. You receive written handover documentation: plan name, IP plan, obstruction reading, speed test results and the support escalation path.

In Lagos our teams cover the Island and mainland — see Lagos installation coverage for neighbourhood notes and estate requirements. In the FCT, Abuja installation covers the city centre, Wuse, Maitama and the suburbs. Multi-site businesses and offices with network requirements beyond a single router should start at enterprise Starlink deployment.

What people ask when residential is not on the screen

Can I join a waitlist for residential? Follow the screen. Some addresses show a deposit or a wait step. Some show Priority only. Some still show residential. A kit in a shop does not bypass that. Where Priority is the plan on offer, the Priority plan page is the route DataGram activates after the address check.

Are other Nigerian cities also restricted? The Priority-only message has been a Lagos and Abuja story more than a national one. Port Harcourt should be checked per address rather than grouped with them. Most of the South-South and South-East have continued to show residential availability in reporting — Warri, Asaba, Uyo, Owerri, Enugu, Aba and Benin City among them — but the only check that matters is your own address on the Starlink site.

Get connected where residential is paused

DataGram activates Priority Plans where the service address is not being offered new residential signup, including addresses in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt that show that message. We do not treat the three cities as one sold-out zone. We handle the path from survey to live connection, invoice in naira with VAT applied, and stay on the account afterwards for renewals and faults.

Residential paused at your address? Activate the Priority Plan with DataGram — we handle the account, payment, hardware and installation. Contact us or message WhatsApp to book your site survey.
