How to Stow Your Starlink Dish for Relocation or Maintenance

You're repainting the roof, moving from Surulere to a Lekki estate, or the facility team demands temporary dish removal during waterproofing — you need stow mode, not yanking power and hoping the motors forgive you. Starlink dishes tilt and track; stowing parks them in a travel-safe position before power-off or unmounting.
Nigerian moves often mean new estate rules, different roof type, and another obstruction survey. Treat relocation as a mini-install, not plug-and-play in the new compound.
When to stow
Roof maintenance, hurricane-season storage on coast (rare but real for seasonal properties), transport in personal vehicles, landlord inspections, and house moves. Also before unbolting the mount — dish in stow handles vibration better than locked in tracking position.
Stow via the Starlink app
Open the Starlink app, select your dish, find Stow or similar setting under Settings or Advanced. Initiate stow and wait — motors move the array flat. Don't power off mid-travel; wait until app confirms stowed. Then disconnect power.
If app won't connect, dish may already be offline — power on with clear sky view, connect Wi-Fi, stow, then proceed.
Physical removal from mount
After stow and power-off, unbolt mount hardware with a helper — dishes are awkward on a ladder. Coil cable in loose loops, not tight hanks that kink the integrated sheath. Store indoors in dry room, not hot trunk indefinitely.
Cable care during moves
Integrated cables don't love being stepped on or crushed under boxes. Protect connector ends from dust — harmattan fine dust gets into pins. Don't detach proprietary connectors forcefully.
Transport within Nigeria
Pad the dish face; drive with stowed orientation maintained. Lagos–Abuja relocations happen weekly — update service address in app after remount at new site or account flags mismatch. Some plan classes care about region — confirm before move.
Remounting at the new site
Survey obstruction before drilling new holes. Estate approval in new development may take weeks — don't assume old compound rules apply. Professional relocation includes survey, mount spec for new roof class, and activation at correct address.
Lagos estate moves often need conduit colour matching and security escorts — schedule before lease start date.
Un-stow and go live
Mount secure, cable routed, power applied. App → Unstow or reboot dish — motors deploy. Wait several minutes for search. Run obstruction scan and speed tests in rooms you'll use.
When not to DIY stow/remount
High-rise parapets, long cable reroutes, and lightning protection re-bonding need installers. Rework from a dropped dish costs more than a survey quote upfront.
Temporary storage during construction
Major renovations may leave the dish stowed indoors for weeks. Store flat, face protected, cable coiled loosely in a dry room — not a hot generator shed. Check monthly for dust on connectors; blow harmattan dust from ports before remount.
If roof work runs through rainy season, accept you may be offline until remount — budget mobile data for critical calls rather than half-mounting on scaffolding that fails inspection.
Updating account and billing after a move
Service address, payment method, and plan class should match the new property before you unstow at the new site. Enterprise and business accounts may need support tickets for region changes — handle admin before lease signing day, not from a moving truck.
Keep kit serial numbers and order emails accessible. Customs and insurance questions during interstate moves are easier with paperwork than with app screenshots alone.
Packing accessories
Bag mount hardware labelled by size — mixing U-bolts after a move delays remount. Coil cable without kinking; use wide loops tied loosely, not tight cable ties biting sheath. Router, power bricks, and Ethernet adapter travel inside dry cabin, not open truck bed with harmattan dust.
First night at the new compound
Unstow only after mount is secure — not 'temporarily' on a patio table while you find bolts. Partial installs tip in night wind. Run obstruction scan before inviting the household to stream — kids remember first impressions.
Meet estate security with scope letter if required. Lagos and Abuja estates may block remount trucks without prior notice — book access before moving day, not after furniture arrives.
Returning to service checklist
Unstow, wait for online, obstruction under estate-acceptable threshold, speed test wired then Wi-Fi in primary rooms, update estate facility log with new cable path photos, and confirm UPS still protects router after electrician touched panels during move.
If old mount holes remain, seal and restore facade per estate rules — facility teams notice abandoned brackets on walkthrough inspections.
Hiring movers and Starlink
Tell movers the dish box is fragile electronics, not furniture — we've seen dishes used as table tops in trucks. Stow before movers arrive; remount after they're gone and ladder access is clear.
Book relocation install for the week after move-in when boxes are unpacked and you know which room needs wired desk access — remount plus Wi-Fi planning in one visit saves a second truck roll.
If the new property is waitlisted on residential signup, confirm plan eligibility before unstowing — hardware moved early with no active service wastes days while support catches up.
Label the stowed dish box with service address and kit ID — interstate moves with multiple properties in the family get chaotic fast.
