How to Factory Reset Your Starlink Router

Starlink Gen 3 router factory reset and reconfiguration in Nigeria

Factory reset on your Starlink router wipes Wi-Fi settings, guest networks, and local admin passwords — it does not cancel your subscription or de-register your dish. Nigerian users often reset in frustration when NEPA reboot loops or mesh conflicts cause outages, then discover the real problem was voltage sag, not firmware. Use reset as a deliberate troubleshooting step, not the first button you press when Netflix buffers.

This guide covers when reset helps, hardware steps by generation, what to document before wiping, and post-reset setup for homes with mesh, bypass mode, and estate VLANs. If obstruction and power are healthy, reset can clear corrupted Wi-Fi configs — if reboots correlate with generator hour, fix power instead.

    Before you reset — document

Screenshot Wi-Fi SSIDs and passwords, bypass mode status, mesh node names, and any port forwarding rules — even though we discourage forwarding. Note whether a third-party firewall sits in bypass. Estate IT in Lagos should save VLAN diagrams stored only on the router you're about to wipe.

    When factory reset actually helps

Corrupted Wi-Fi settings after failed firmware update. Forgotten admin password on stock router. Duplicate DHCP from accidental double-router setup. Reset does not fix: damaged dish cable, high obstruction, unpaid subscription, suspended account, or chronic undervoltage from extension cords.

    When not to reset

If dish status shows searching forever after storms, survey obstruction before reset. If account suspended, reset wastes time — fix billing. Read reboot troubleshooting first.

    Gen 3 router reset steps

Power on router. Press and hold reset button on back — use pin tool — until LED pattern indicates factory reset per kit manual (typically 10+ seconds until light changes). Release; wait several minutes for reboot. Default Wi-Fi credentials appear on router label or app pairing flow.

    Gen 2 and earlier

Older kits vary — some reset via app, some via physical button on power supply units. Follow label on your hardware; don't hold buttons blindly while guests assume you killed the link for the weekend.

    Post-reset setup in Nigerian homes

Re-run Starlink app setup; confirm dish online. Set new Wi-Fi SSID and strong password — estates leak default passwords fast. Re-add mesh nodes on factory defaults. If using bypass mode, re-enable bypass and confirm third-party router pulls DHCP on WAN. Test Ethernet desk locations before declaring victory.

    Bypass and enterprise reconfiguration

Enterprise sites with FortiGate or MikroTik rules need rule backup off-device — reset on Starlink side still requires WAN rediscovery. Schedule reset in maintenance window; notify remote staff VPN will drop.

    If reset doesn't restore service

Power-cycle dish from app, check cable glands, verify subscription active, run obstruction test. Escalate to Starlink support with serial numbers. DataGram clients send us app screenshots — we distinguish LAN issues from dish faults remotely when photos are clear.

Wi-Fi naming and estate SSID clutter

After reset, don't reuse SSID names that half the estate also uses — 'FamilyWiFi' collisions cause phantom connection issues. Pick distinct SSIDs; hide guest network password rotation in a password manager the household actually shares.

    Mesh re-pairing order

Factory reset router means mesh nodes also need re-adoption — power nodes near router first, adopt in app order outer to inner. Nigerian concrete homes need wired backhaul for at least one node if you learned that lesson before reset.

    Firmware after reset

Router may pull firmware update immediately after reset — don't power off during update LED patterns. Harmattan power flicker during update is rare but nasty; UPS helps.

When to call DataGram instead of another reset

Second reset in a week without fixing root cause is a signal. If reboot loops persist on Ethernet with clean power, book cable and mount inspection — not reset roulette.

    Re-adding devices after reset

Phones and laptops: forget old SSID, join new network. Smart TVs, printers, CCTV NVR, and inverter Wi-Fi modules need manual re-entry — budget an hour in the utility room. Estate security desk: notify before reset if their DVR shared your Wi-Fi. Kids' tablets: update parental controls if you use them.

    Bypass mode reconfiguration sequence

After reset, Starlink returns to routing mode with its own DHCP. Sequence: confirm dish online in app → enable bypass → connect firewall WAN → verify single DHCP server on LAN → test VPN. Double NAT symptoms: devices get 192.168.1.x from Starlink while firewall expects 192.168.50.x — pick one router to own DHCP.

    Alternatives before full factory reset

App Wi-Fi settings change SSID without wiping everything when only password rotation is needed. Firmware update via app fixes some corruption. One clean 60-second power-cycle clears transient glitches — not ten rapid toggles. Ethernet speed test isolates Wi-Fi from satellite before you wipe all config.

    Estate handover after reset

If landlord or HOA holds Wi-Fi credentials for security CCTV, update facility log after reset. Label new password in sealed envelope for estate office if policy requires. Lagos estates sometimes mandate IT notification before network changes affecting shared systems — check rules before Friday afternoon reset experiments.

Gen 3 LED patterns during reset

LED behaviour varies by firmware — solid white, pulsing, then reboot sequence. Don't power off during the middle pattern thinking it failed. Read the label on your kit or in-app help for your hardware generation. Pulling power mid-reset extends downtime and can corrupt config worse than the problem you started with.

    When reset makes things worse

Reset during voltage sag loops repeats boot forever — fix UPS first. Reset on suspended account leaves you offline with no Wi-Fi and still no billing fix. Reset without exporting bypass rules loses VPN port forwards your IT consultant configured — export configs off-device before any wipe.

Reset didn't fix it — or you need bypass and mesh rebuilt properly? Contact DataGram or book home installation support for structured handover.
