Amazon Leo vs. Starlink: What the 2027 Rivalry Means for Nigeria

Use Starlink if you need a working link in Nigeria now. Wait for Amazon Leo only if you already have a good link and you only want a second path later. Amazon Leo was formerly Project Kuiper, and this page names neither a Nigeria launch date nor a market share.
A failover link is a second path that takes over when the first one drops. Starlink can be that path today, through home installation or an office install. Amazon Leo is not a shop you can buy from in Nigeria yet.
What has Amazon actually said?
Amazon has said it plans more than 3,000 satellites in low orbit. Test satellites have flown, and Amazon has talked about deals with phone companies in some countries. None of that is a Nigeria checkout.
Can you buy Amazon Leo in Lagos?
No. A start in a few other places is not a Lagos launch. Nigeria retail, an NCC licence, and a local installer network are still open. Check Amazon and the regulator, not a reseller rumour.
What is still missing for Nigeria?
There is no published naira price for an Amazon Leo kit. There is no official Nigerian seller list, and no marine kit you can order for the Gulf of Guinea. Guessing a 2027 street price would be a story, not a purchase order.
What can you buy in Nigeria today?
You can buy Starlink now, if the address is offered a plan. Check that on Starlink's map before you pay. A field range around 50 to 1,000 megabits down and 10 to 100 up is a guide, not a promise.
Latency, the delay before a reply, is often talked about around 20 to 40 milliseconds. Weather and the Wi-Fi in the house still cause most complaints. Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt offices already mix Starlink with fibre.
Should you wait for Amazon Leo?
Wait if your current link is good enough and you only want a spare path later. Do not wait if the office loses money every time the power or the fibre drops. Fit Starlink now, and leave a spare socket so a second dish can join later.
If Amazon Leo does launch here with business terms, try it beside the dish you already have. Do not rip the working link out on day one. A home and a camp still need a clear sky this month.
Will both dishes need the same gap in the sky?
An obstruction is something in the way of the sky, such as a tree, a tank, or a wall. Do not assume an Amazon dish and a Starlink dish need the same gap. Survey the roof. A brochure photo is not a survey.
What about duty and the naira?
Any kit that lands in Nigeria can face duty and VAT. Amazon Leo does not get a free pass at customs. The import tax guide is for budgeting, not legal advice.
A compound in Delta State still needs a clear sky and the right plan. Waiting on a brand name does not turn the lights on.
